STATE INSPECTED ALCOHOLOMETERS AND HYDROMETERS

State Inspected alcoholometers, Hydrometers and thermometers obey rules imposed by international recommendation No. 44 of the International Organisation of Legal Metrology.

The alcoholometers are graduated for readings at the bottom of the meniscus.
The aerometers are graduated for reading at the top of the meniscus.

A label is put inside the shell of the alcoholometers and hydrometers that displays the essential characteristics: manufacturer’s name, possible class, identification of the instrument and the product for which it is adapted, measurement unit and reference temperature.

The inspection carried out by the State consists of verifying that the instruments meet the following regulatory requirements:
• Verification of three points at the top, center and bottom of the scale.
• The maximum error tolerated must not be more than:
- 0.1 % vol. spread throughout the length of the scale for the alcoholometers.
- 0.3 g/dm3 spread throughout the length of the scale for hydrometers.

The product’s conformity is attested:
• By the engraving of the inspection date, name of the state laboratory that carried out the testing and a mark guaranteeing the positioning of the scale.
• By a verification report.

Verification Report

The instruments can be COFRAC certified. In this case, they are calibrated by hydrostatic weighing with continuous variation in the depth of the instrument’s immersion in the reference liquid kept at a temperature of +20°C ± 0.08°C (CUCKOW method). The inspection certificate that accompanies the instrument is complete. It gives the real values, the instrument’s indications and the right corrections to be applied.

Inspection Certificate

Alcoholometers are graduated for a maximum range of 10% vol; accuracy 0.1 % vol. They are available in a case of 5 or 10 accompanied by a thermometer.
• Standard range 0/10, 10/20 … 90/100.
• Specials 6/16, 45/55 - 95/103 - 9/16, 11/18, 15/22.

Hydrometers are graduated for a maximum range of 30g/dm3; accuracy 0.2g/dm3.
• Standard range 970/1000, 1000/1030, 1030/1060 … 1120/1150 and 990/1020
• Special (983/985)/1003 also called Extracto-oenometer.

Accessories: the thermometers are also inspected (bearing a specific marking) and the test tubes are calibrated.

The thermometers are graduated in ° Celsius and placed in a protective glass tube.
Range 0/35 in 1/2°, 0/50 in 1/2°, -20/+35 in 1/2°, -1/+31 in 1/10°.
